Sonia Mak is a first-generation Chinese American and Los Angeles-based curator, fundraiser, and arts administrator. She was a founding curator at the Chinese American Museum, an NEH Summer Institute Fellow, and has worked at the Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Autry National Center, Vincent Price Art Museum, Craft Contemporary, Charles Gaines Studio, and Morono Kiang Gallery, a contemporary Chinese art gallery. She is co-founder and co-curator of Art Salon Chinatown, a showcase for Asian American artists, established in 2018. She holds a BA in Art History from San Francisco State University and a MA in Art History from University of California, advised by Amelia Jones. Her interest is in modern and contemporary work by women and BIPOC artists. Her curatorial work has focused on Asian American Art. Ms. Mak’s exhibition and catalogue project, ’Round the Clock: Chinese American Artists Working in Los Angeles, was presented as part of the Getty Foundation’s first unprecedented regional initiative, Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA, 1945-1980. Her fundraising experience encompasses managing galas, grant writing and management, sponsorships, cultivating major donor and board relations, as well as membership and annual giving programs. She has served as a grant panel reviewer for the California Community Foundation, Arts Council of Long Beach, City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture.
